Description

Gaviscon tablets belong to a group of medication called ‘reflux suppressants’ and are used for the symptomatic treatment of

• gastro-oesophageal reflux such as acid regurgitation
• heartburn
• indigestion (related to reflux)
• They work by forming a protective layer on top of the stomach content, preventing stomach acid from rising up the oesophagus (food pipe) which prevents pain and discomfort caused by the acid reaching this more sensitive area.

How to use Gaviscon tablets

Chew thoroughly before swallowing.

Adults, including the elderly and children 12 years and over:

When symptoms occur take 2-4 tablets after meals and at bedtime.

Children under 12 years:

Under medical advice.

Product can be taken if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, however limit treatment duration as much as possible.

If symptoms continue after 7 days contacts your doctor

Gaviscon tablets can rarely result in an allergic reaction, if you experience any of the following symptoms speak to a healthcare professional

• skin rash, itching, difficulty breathing, dizziness or swelling of the face.

Ingredients

Active Ingredients: 250mg sodium alginate, 133.5mg sodium hydrogen carbonate and 80mg calcium carbonate

Other Ingredients: mannitol (E421), macrogol 20,000, copovidone, aspartame (E951), peppermint flavouring, magnesium stearate and acesulfame potassium. These tablets do not contain sugar or gluten.

Warnings

Do not take more than the recommended dose.

Do not take Gaviscon Peppermint Flavour Tablets if you:
Are allergic to any of the ingredients

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you:
follow a diet restriction in sodium (11mmol -253mg per 4 tablets) and calcium (3.2mmol per 4 tablets)
advised to follow a low salt diet as daily dose contains s 1012 mg sodium equivalent to 50.6% of the adult recommended maximum daily dietary intake for sodium (found in table salt).
suffer from kidney or heart disease, as certain salts can interfere with it.
Have phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare genetic disorder in which phenylalanine builds up because the body cannot remove it properly (3.75 mg aspartame -source of phenylalanine- per tablet).

Do take within 2 hours of taking other medication by mouth (it can interfere with their action), especially:
antibiotics (tetracyclines and quinolones such as orfloxacin)
iron preparation
antifungals such as ketoconazole
digoxin and beta blockers (for heart conditions)
penicillamine (commonly for rheumatoid arthritis)
glucocorticoid (for inflammatory and autoimmune disorders)
neuroleptics (for mental illness)
thyroid hormones
chloroquine (for malaria)
estramustine (for prostate cancer)
biphosphonates (for osteoporosis).
