What is IBS and how do I know I have it?

IBS stands for Irritable Bowl Syndrome and is a condition that affects the digestive system. Although the exact cause is unknown it has been linked to

• Stress, eating and drinking habits
• Food allergies or intolerances
• Stimulants such as coffee
• Hormonal factors
• family history of IBS

You will experience symptoms such as stomach cramps, bloating, excessive wind and some also have diarrhoea and constipation. Symptoms come and go and can last days, weeks or months at a time.

The condition has currently no cure and is a lifelong problem which makes it very frustrating. However, with diet change and medication symptoms can be managed to allow you to get on with the things you love.

What is Buscopans Intended use

Buscopan IBS Relief contains hyoscine butylbromide, an antispasmodic. It works by relaxing cramping muscles in the bowl as this is what causes the pain and discomfort in IBS.

After 15 minutes of taking Buscopan IBS Relief it will begin to act right at the source of the problem relieving IBS symptoms quickly and effectively.

Browns Pharmacy diet and lifestyle tips to manage IBS:

• Have regular meals, try to have it homemade with fresh ingredient and take time to eat.
• Drink at least 8 cups of fluid per day, especially water or other non-caffeinated drinks (e.g. herbal teas)
• Keep a diary of the foods you eat and any symptoms you get – to identify what triggers your IBS
• Try to find ways to relax
• Get lots of exercise
• Try Probiotics for a month
• Do not miss meals or leave long gaps between eating
• Eat less fatty, spicy or processed food
• Restrict tea and coffee to 3 cups per day
• Reduce alcohol and fizzy drinks
• Limit fresh fruit to 3 portions per day (one proportion should be about 80g)
• Limit intake of high-fibre foods (wholemeal/high-fibre bread, brown rise etc.)

How to use Buscopan

Do not crush or chew, swallow whole with water.

Adults and children from age 12:

Initially ONE tablet three times daily then increase to maximum of TWO tablets four times daily, if required

Children under 12 years:

Not recommended

Buscopan IBS Relief should not be taken continuously for more than two weeks. If symptoms change, worsen or persist contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Possible side effects:

Uncommon (affects fewer than 1 in 100 people): Dry mouth Abnormal sweating or reduced sweating Skin reactions such as urticaria and pruritis (itching) Tachycardia (increased heart rate)

Ingredients

Active Ingredients: hyoscine butylbromide 10mg

Other Ingredients: calcium hydrogen phosphate, maize starch, soluble starch, colloidal silica, tartaric acid, stearic acid, sucrose, talc, acacia, titanium dioxide, macrogol 6000, carnauba wax, white beeswax and povidone

Warnings

Do not take more than the recommended dose.

Some people may have temporary blurring of vision while taking this medicine. Do not drive or operate machinery if affected.

Do not take if you:
Are allergic to hyoscine butylbromide or any of the other ingredients
Intolerant to certain sugars (contains small amount of sucrose)
have glaucoma (an eye problem)
have ‘myasthenia gravis’ a very rare muscle weakness problem
have a suspected or confirmed blockage of the bowel
have a condition where the bowel is blocked and does not work properly (paralytic or obstructive ileus). Symptoms include severe abdominal pain with lack of stools and/or nausea/vomiting
have a very enlarged bowel (megacolon)
are pregnant or breastfeeding

Immediately contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have unexplained abdominal pain which persists or worsens or occurs with:
Fever
feeling sick
being sick
changes in your bowel movements
abdominal tenderness
low blood pressure
feeling faint
blood in your bowel movements

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you:
are 40 years or over and has been a while since your last attack of IBS or the symptoms are different this time.
have recently passed blood from the bowel
have severe constipation
are feeling sick or vomiting
have lost your appetite or lost weight
have difficulty or pain passing urine
have a fever
have recently travelled abroad (in case you have picked up a stomach bug)
have a very fast heart rate or other heart problems
have been treated by a doctor for a severe sweating problem
Take other medication, particularly:
Antihistamines
Tetracyclic or tricyclic medicines
Antipsychotic medicines such as butyrophenones or phenothiazines
Dopamine antagonists such as metoclopramide
Beta 2 adrenergic medicines such as salbutamol inhalers
Quinidine or disopyramide
Amantadine
Anticholinergic medicines such as tiotropium, ipratropium
atropine-like medicines -
