BE PROUD OF YOUR MOUTH
Practicing a good oral hygiene routine is important as prevention is always the best option. Many oral health conditions are preventable and can be treated in their early stages if good oral health is maintained. Oral health positively impacts on your general health, well-being and quality of life.
Here are 7 tips to keeping your mouth healthy throughout your life:
-
Use a fluoride toothpaste
Fluoride is an important tool in the fight against tooth decay, make sure your toothpaste has the right quantity of fluoride in it.
-
2:2 Brush for two minutes, two times daily
The removal of food and plaque protects your mouth from tooth decay and gum disease. To stay on top of this, brushing should be done at minimum twice a day.
-
Brush every surface
When brushing you should aim to cover four main areas, the inside surface of the teeth, outside surface of the teeth, chewing surface of the teeth and the gums.
-
Do not rinse with water straight away
Using water to wash your mouth out after brushing will remove the protective fluoride, spit out any excess toothpaste instead.
-
Replace your toothbrush every three months
Continuing to use an old, frayed toothbrush does not clean your mouth or teeth as effectively than a new brush.
-
Floss at least once daily
Interdental cleaners are important for reaching those difficult areas between your teeth. Regular cleaning helps to dislodge any food that has stuck between gaps in your teeth and may reduce gum disease and bad breath by removing plaque that forms along the gum line.
-
Protect your mouth while you are on the go
If brushing is not possible, rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash or chewing sugar-free gum can help after meals and snacks.
