Common colds are caused by viral infections in your nose and throat. Vitamin C has been found to shorten the length of time and severity of symptoms. A recent study supports the theory that 2000 international units of vitamin D taken daily for a full year can virtually eliminate colds and reduces the likelihood of suffering from acute respiratory infections.

Probiotics have been found to not only reduce the number of different colds throughout the year but also shorten the amount of days suffering from symptoms per cold as well as the severity of the symptoms. It was found to be particularly useful after a course of antibiotics.

Headaches and migraines can cause discomfort and disruption to your daily life, particularly if you are a repeat sufferer. Tension headaches, which may be brought on by stress and anxiety, have been shown to be reduced when taking 5-HTP as it increases the brain chemical serotonin. 5-HTP has also been found to reduce and even prevent migraines in some studies.

Chronic tension headache pain has been shown to reduce by 87.5% when magnesium is taken. It has been shown to lower both the frequency and severity of migraines and headaches associated with hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle, particularly when taken along with calcium.

Fish oils are thought to reduce the number and duration of headaches, as shown in studies showing 86% of migraine sufferers experiencing a reduction in severity, frequency and duration of attacks when taking these lipids.

Cold sores tend to begin with a tingling, itching or burning feeling caused by the herpes simplex virus. Zinc has been found to reduce the number of breakouts with the risk of becoming infected by the virus being reduced while taking zinc, as seen in studies. L-lysine has also been found to have a possible effect on the prevention and duration of cold sores and is best taken while reducing arginine rich-foods, such as nuts, seeds and dairy.
